Ken Price Retrospective at Los Angeles County Museum (LACMA)

Banners all over town for the Ken Price retrospective exhibition at LACMA in Los Angeles.
Big show and great work but as displayed by no less than Frank Gehry – a disappointment because …
The room was overpoweringly large rather than the intimate scale the work needed.  All cups – which are different on every facet- were displayed against a wall so the other sides could not be viewed.  A positive forest of individual plinths when one large sweep of support for works of very similar scale could have been so much more effective.  Almost no mention of the word ‘ceramic’, only ‘sculpture’.
However there is a big fat book on his life and work to accompany the show, just out – could not read but just flipped through. Illustrations are splendidly full page and look very good with intimate detail. No photography allowed in the show. Too heavy to post or bring but Amazon/Book Depository will have at bargain prices any day.

All threat removed because of Health and Safety reulations!

In the Ceramics and Glass display at LACMA.
Magdalene Odundo’s work on display. It was the scale that surprised, having only ever seen her work previously in 2D on a page or a screen. That is an average sized Hamada in the background!
